Christians: If Isaiah proclaimed that Elijah would comfort Jerusalem, for she had received double for all....?

her sins (destroyed by Babylonian Empire 586 BC; by Rome under Titus 70AD), before "a voice crying in the wilderness," why then did John the Baptist come saying that the "axe was already at the root of the tree" when speaking to Judea and Jerusalem. Do you understand what I just wrote?
